Ganden Monastery

The Great Ganden Monastery of Tibet was founded in 1409 by Je Tsongkhapa Lobsang Dragpa and is the first and primary monastery of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism. Being one of the”great three” Gelug university monasteries of Tibet, the Ganden Monastery had by 1959 a monk population of 7500.

In 1966, the Great Ganden Monastery was re-established in the state of Karnataka in India.
