The Ganden or Gaden Tripa
The Gaden Tripa (Trichen or Tri Rinpoche), known as the Holder of the Golden Throne of the Gelug lineage (The Yellow Hat Sect), is the supreme spiritual head of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism.
This lineage dates back to 1409 when the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism was founded by Je Tsongkhapa as prophesized by Buddha Shakyamuni. The first of the three great monasteries of the Gelug sect; Gaden Monastery also called Tushita in Sanskrit was established as the main seat of Je Tsongkapa in Central Tibet.
After the death of Je Tsongkhapa, his two main disciples Gyaltsab Je and Khedrub Je, the second and third Gaden Tripa respectively, succeeded him as the Abbotts of Gaden Monastery. Contrary to the widespread belief that the Dalai Lama is the leader, the actual head of the Gelug lineage is the Gaden Tripa, who is the throne holder to the seat of the founder Je Tsongkhapa.
His Eminence Kyabje Khyungser Trichen Rinpoche (Shangrila Tulku) is the supreme reincarnation of H.H. Trichen Gendun Tsultrim the 65th Gaden Tripa.
